Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Alex Baumann immigrated to Canada in 1969 and became the country's greatest swimmer. He won two gold medals and set two world records at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the 200m and 400m individual medley -- Canada's first Olympic swimming gold since 1912. Coached by Dr. Jeno Tihanyi, Baumann was undefeated in individual medley from 1981 to 1986 and held 38 Canadian records by age 17.
