Considered by many the greatest swimmer in Canadian history. At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics he won gold in both the 400m and 1500m freestyle, setting six world records -- a feat unmatched in his era. Self-taught and never formally coached, he retired from international competition at 18 and remained Canada only Olympic swimming gold medalist until Alex Baumann in 1984.
